In the sprawling city of Valtharion, where bustling marketplaces meet shadowy alleyways, the City Guard stands as both protector and enforcer. But beneath the polished armor lies a web of loyalty, corruption, and intrigue.
Valtharion, known as the City of Crowns, is a hub of commerce, power, and secrets. The city sprawls along the banks of the Azure Ribbon, a winding river that flows through its heart, separating the glittering noble districts from the crowded slums of The Gutterworks. Towering above it all is the Crownspire Citadel, the seat of power and the headquarters of the Valtharion City Guard.
The City Guard is a diverse force tasked with keeping the peace in a city where tensions simmer just below the surface. In the bustling markets of Goldhaven Square, they break up petty disputes. Along the river docks, they keep smugglers at bay. And in the gilded halls of nobility, they act as both bodyguards and spies, ensuring the balance of power is maintained.
But not all guards serve with honor. In The Gutterworks, corruption runs rampant. Rumors speak of guards who turn a blind eye to crime for the right price or even aid the city’s infamous underworld factions, such as the Silver Serpents, a gang of thieves and assassins.
Adventures:
1. The Shadow of the Serpents:
Captain Thorne hires the party to investigate the Silver Serpents, a gang suspected of planning a major heist in Goldhaven Square. As the party digs deeper, they uncover evidence implicating a high-ranking guard in the scheme.
2. Guarded Secrets:
A noble family claims one of their treasures has been stolen, and the party is tasked with recovering it. The investigation leads to The Gutterworks, where they discover the theft may have been orchestrated by a guard seeking justice for a long-standing grudge.
3. The Riot of Valtharion:
Political tensions boil over when dock workers riot after a series of unexplained disappearances. The City Guard is stretched thin, and the party is brought in to maintain order while uncovering the dark truth behind the kidnappings.
Characters:
-Captain Eryndor Thorne, a grizzled veteran known for his unshakable resolve and sharp instincts.
-Lieutenant Lyssa Morvain, a rising star whose idealism clashes with the harsh realities of the city’s politics.
-Sergeant Krag Stonejaw, a towering half-orc who patrols the docks, feared by smugglers and criminals alike.
Tips:
-NPC Allies or Foes: Use guards as allies who help the party investigate crimes—or as antagonists when players find themselves on the wrong side of the law.
-Corruption and Betrayal: Introduce a subplot where the party uncovers corruption within the ranks of the City Guard, forcing them to choose between exposing the truth or protecting their allies.
-The Guard as Quest Givers: Captain Thorne or Lieutenant Morvain could recruit the party to handle tasks the Guard cannot officially sanction, such as infiltrating the Silver Serpents.
-Set scenes in Goldhaven Square, where guards break up merchant disputes under the shadow of ornate fountains.
-Use the Azure Ribbon Docks for high-stakes chases, with Sergeant Stonejaw hot on the trail of smugglers.
-Position guards at the gates of Crownspire Citadel, their gleaming armor reflecting the grandeur of the city’s elite.
-Incorporate props like gates, walls, and patrol formations to stage dramatic encounters or stealth missions.
